In 2013 Oblong publicly released a creative coding platform called Greenhouse. I co-lead the documentation effort with Mattie Ruth Backman, which resulted in http://greenhouse.oblong.com, the introduction and reference resource for the platform. We looked at many existing creative coding platforms' documentation websites and combined the best elements of their experiences as well as developing a few tricks of our own.
I designed the page layout and structure of the Greenhouse SDK reference pages in collaboration with engineer Mattie Ruth Backman and visual designer Pete Hawkes. We spent a lot of time designing the C++ class API reference pages, since they are the main reason someone would visit the website. We sought to balance showing API information and example code for beginners, while still providing access to in-depth technical information for expert users.
I also spent time designing layouts and ways of presenting content in the learning articles, the second most useful type of page to visitors. This was mainly an exercise in content layout and organization.
We implemented a simpler version (in terms of the front end and content management) due to engineering resource constraints.
